Devil's Food Cake with Black Cocoa Fudge Frosting, Garnished with Homemade Royal Icing Skeleton Sprinkles
Follow the instructions from the DIY post. Instead of using colours just use plain white and draw away some bones! they don't have to be perfect.
Preheat the oven to 350F / 180 C degrees, grease and line the cake tins with parchment paper.
In a small bowl, add the hot water and coffee powder and keep it aside.
Sift the flour, black cocoa and baking powder in a separate bowl.
In a bowl fitted with paddle attachment of a stand mixer. Add the butter, sugar and oil in the bowl and beat until light and fluffy.
Add and beat one egg at a time. Add the melted chocolate
Add the dry ingredients in batches alternating with the hot coffee and the milk to the flour.
Mix the batter completely and scrape the sides to ensure the ingredients are fully incorporated.
Divide the batter into 3 batches and bake each for about 20 minutes. Once baked, let it cool on a cooling rack.
Add the butter and half of the icing sugar and beat until light.
Sift the black cocoa, rest of the icing sugar and whisk. Slowly add milk to desired consistency
If the frosting feels too thick, add more milk or cream. If it is runny or too thin add more icing sugar.
On a cake board, add a dollop of chocolate fudge frosting. Place a layer of cake and add a layer of frosting on top of the cake.
Repeat this for all layers. Crumb coat around the cake, let it chill in the refrigerator for 25-30 mins.
Once the cake is cool and set, it's easier to cut out parts as needed. I cut out 2 rectangles for graves.
Add some chocolate dirt that you made, add a few bones and skeletons
Decorate as you wish and sky is the limit! make it creepy and make it spooky! afterall it is a murder house! I also added some bone sprinkles in a box to make it like a suitcase filled with body parts!!
Chill for 30 mins and serve!
